MOTORCYCLE UPDATES MOTORCYCLE UPDATES Getting a motorcycle licence in Saskatchewan is a step-by-step graduated process regulated by Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI). It’s called the Motorcycle Graduated Driver Licensing (MGDL) program, and you must move through three stages before you get a full licence. 1. Basic eligibility Before you even start, you must: Be at least 16 years old (parental consent if under 18) Hold a valid Class 5 (car) licence or higher Meet vision/medical standards and pass required tests 2. Learner stage (Endorsement 6) This is your first motorcycle licence. You must: Pass written tests (rules of the road, signs, motorcycle knowledge — usually 80% pass mark) Complete either: an SGI-approved motorcycle training course, or a basic ability road test Key restrictions: ❌ No passengers ❌ No night riding ❌ No towing or sidecars Must display an “L” placard You must stay in this stage at least 12 months. 3. Novice 1 stage To move up, you must: Hold your learner licence for 1 year Pass a motorcycle road test Restrictions still apply: ❌ No passengers ❌ No riding between midnight and 5 a.m. Must display an “N” placard You must remain incident-free for 12 months. 4. Novice 2 stage After 1 clean year in Novice 1: You can carry passengers No time-of-day riding restrictions Still no towing/sidecars Another 12 months incident-free is required. 5. Full motorcycle licence (M endorsement) Once you complete all stages: You receive a full “M” endorsement, allowing you to legally operate a motorcycle without MGDL restrictions Other important rules You must have a motorcycle endorsement to legally ride Helmets are mandatory for all riders and passengers Proper protective gear is strongly enforced throughout the program Bottom line It typically takes at least 3 years to go from beginner to a full motorcycle licence. The system is designed to build skills gradually and reduce accidents. |
