MOTORCYCLE UPDATES

Getting a motorcycle licence in Saskatchewan is a step-by-step graduated process regulated by Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI). It’s called the Motorcycle Graduated Driver Licensing (MGDL) program, and you must move through three stages before you get a full licence.

1. Basic eligibility

Before you even start, you must:

Be at least 16 years old (parental consent if under 18)

Hold a valid Class 5 (car) licence or higher

Meet vision/medical standards and pass required tests

2. Learner stage (Endorsement 6)

This is your first motorcycle licence.

You must:

Pass written tests (rules of the road, signs, motorcycle knowledge — usually 80% pass mark)

Complete either:

an SGI-approved motorcycle training course, or

a basic ability road test

Key restrictions:

❌ No passengers

❌ No night riding

❌ No towing or sidecars

Must display an “L” placard

You must stay in this stage at least 12 months.

3. Novice 1 stage

To move up, you must:

Hold your learner licence for 1 year

Pass a motorcycle road test

Restrictions still apply:

❌ No passengers

❌ No riding between midnight and 5 a.m.

Must display an “N” placard

You must remain incident-free for 12 months.

4. Novice 2 stage

After 1 clean year in Novice 1:

You can carry passengers

No time-of-day riding restrictions

Still no towing/sidecars

Another 12 months incident-free is required.

5. Full motorcycle licence (M endorsement)

Once you complete all stages:

You receive a full “M” endorsement, allowing you to legally operate a motorcycle without MGDL restrictions

Other important rules

You must have a motorcycle endorsement to legally ride

Helmets are mandatory for all riders and passengers

Proper protective gear is strongly enforced throughout the program

Bottom line

It typically takes at least 3 years to go from beginner to a full motorcycle licence.

The system is designed to build skills gradually and reduce accidents.

AUTOMATIC VS STANDARD

Choosing the Right Transmission for Your Trucking Career: Automatic vs. Standard

Here are a few suggestions to help take the right decision in terms for transmission: Frist of all, let’s be clear that automatic transmission is the future. The majority of the mainstream trucking companies only buy automatic trucks and if you plan to go into long-haul trucking or even work for a common carrier, automatic transmission is the pick.

But, If you want to have more fun with trucking and you enjoy being in control of the gears and in the near future, you want to be an owner-operator, you should for the standard transmission.

Now, there are a few more factors you should bring into consideration, for example: with manual transmission, you have a larger job pool to fish in. But, if your license have auto transmission restriction on it, you can’t apply to the companies that still have some standard transmission tractors.

Also, when It comes to truck driving schools, not all schools offer truck training with a standard transmission. So, if you plan to get a restriction-free license, make sure you look for the school that actually offers training on standard transmission.

Trans industrial training now offers training in standard and automatic transmission. Give us a call or contact us thru our web page.
