MOTORCYCLE UPDATES
Getting a motorcycle licence in Saskatchewan is a step-by-step graduated process regulated by Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI). Its called the Motorcycle Graduated Driver Licensing (MGDL) program, and you must move through three stages before you get a full licence.
1. Basic eligibility
Before you even start, you must:
Be at least 16 years old (parental consent if under 18)
Hold a valid Class 5 (car) licence or higher
Meet vision/medical standards and pass required tests
2. Learner stage (Endorsement 6)
This is your first motorcycle licence.
You must:
Pass written tests (rules of the road, signs, motorcycle knowledge usually 80% pass mark)
Complete either:
an SGI-approved motorcycle training course, or
a basic ability road test
Key restrictions:
β No passengers
β No night riding
β No towing or sidecars
Must display an L placard
You must stay in this stage at least 12 months.
3. Novice 1 stage
To move up, you must:
Hold your learner licence for 1 year
Pass a motorcycle road test
Restrictions still apply:
β No passengers
β No riding between midnight and 5 a.m.
Must display an N placard
You must remain incident-free for 12 months.
4. Novice 2 stage
After 1 clean year in Novice 1:
You can carry passengers
No time-of-day riding restrictions
Still no towing/sidecars
Another 12 months incident-free is required.
5. Full motorcycle licence (M endorsement)
Once you complete all stages:
You receive a full M endorsement, allowing you to legally operate a motorcycle without MGDL restrictions
Other important rules
You must have a motorcycle endorsement to legally ride
Helmets are mandatory for all riders and passengers
Proper protective gear is strongly enforced throughout the program
Bottom line
It typically takes at least 3 years to go from beginner to a full motorcycle licence.
The system is designed to build skills gradually and reduce accidents.
